Off-Broadway’s ‘Heathers the Musical’ Extends Through September

The Off-Broadway revival of “Heathers the Musical” has extended its run at New World Stages and will now play through September 6. The announcement marks the production’s third extension since opening last summer.

The production stars Kuhoo Verma as Veronica Sawyer and Casey Likes as J.D. The cast also includes Peyton List as Heather Chandler, Jackera Davis as Heather Duke, Elizabeth Teeter as Heather McNamara, and Kate Rockwell as Ms. Fleming and Veronica’s mother. Casting is by Rachel Hoffman and Jimmy Larkin of The Telsey Office.

Featuring music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and book and lyrics by Kevin Murphy, “Heathers the Musical” is based on the 1988 film of the same name. The story follows Veronica Sawyer, a student at Westerberg High who becomes part of the school’s most powerful clique, known as the Heathers. After meeting a new student, J.D., Veronica’s life takes an unexpected turn, setting off a series of events that challenge the school’s social order. The revival is directed by Andy Fickman.

“Heathers the Musical” first premiered in Los Angeles in 2013 before transferring to New York in 2014, where it also played at New World Stages under Fickman’s direction in a different staging. 

The authors later revised the show for a 2018 West End production, introducing new material and script changes. Those updates were subsequently featured on two national tours and a return engagement in London. The current Off-Broadway revival incorporates those revisions for New York audiences.

Fickman has reunited members of his London creative team for this production. Choreography is by Gary Lloyd, with additional choreography by Stephanie Klemons. Scenic and costume design is by David Shields, with co-costume design by Siena Zoë Allen. Lighting design is by Ben Cracknell, and sound design is by Dan Samson. Will Joy serves as music supervisor, and Mona Seyed-Bolorforosh is music director.
