LeBron James’ Announces Plans to Sign with 76ers – Reshaping NBA Ticket Demand for Upcoming Season

ScoreBig data showed Philadelphia ranked near the bottom third of the NBA as a home draw last season, while James’ Lakers led the league on the road.

LeBron James is headed to Philadelphia, a move expected to produce an immediate surge in demand and prices for 76ers tickets at home and across the NBA.

James announced Friday on social media that he will join the 76ers for his record-extending 24th NBA season, ending an eight-year run with the Los Angeles Lakers. ESPN reported that the 41-year-old will sign a two-year, $8 million contract that includes a player option.

The move alters Philadelphia’s championship outlook, but its most immediate commercial impact may be felt in the ticket market.

A TicketNews analysis of 2025-26 regular-season sales data supplied by secondary ticket marketplace ScoreBig found that the 76ers ranked 23rd among the NBA’s 30 teams as a home draw. Philadelphia ranked 14th when appearing as the visiting team and 20th when its home and road appearances were combined.

The 76ers’ average sold ticket price for home games was $88 ranking 22nd in the league. Tickets sold for Philadelphia’s road appearances averaged $101, placing the team 18th among NBA road draws by that measure.

James’ former team provides an indication of how dramatically those results could change.

The Lakers ranked first in the NBA as a road draw in ScoreBig’s data. The average sold ticket price for Lakers road games was $260 — more than two and a half times the corresponding average for 76ers road appearances.

The Lakers’ visit to Philadelphia also produced one of the strongest pricing results on the 76ers’ home schedule. Its average sold ticket price of $162 ranked fourth among Philadelphia’s 41 regular-season home games and was approximately 85% above the team’s full-season home average.

“LeBron James has been one of basketball’s biggest stars and most reliable crowd draws for more than 20 years, so there is unquestionably going to be an impact on the ticket market when he arrives in Philadelphia,” a ScoreBig spokesperson told TicketNews.

“The league itself was waiting for his decision before locking in some of its most prominent games and television windows, which demonstrates the commercial importance that continues to follow him. Philadelphia ranked in the lower third of the league as a home draw in our data last season, while James’ Lakers ranked first on the road, so we expect meaningful increases in demand and average sold ticket prices for both 76ers home games and their appearances around the league.”

The reference to the league’s schedule is more than speculation.

As TicketNews previously reported, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said James’ destination was preventing the league from finalizing some of the most prominent dates on its 2026-27 schedule. Silver said the decision would affect opening week, Christmas Day and other nationally televised games, with teams and television networks seeking clarity before the schedule was completed.

The comments provided a rare public acknowledgment of the degree to which one player’s commercial appeal can influence not only television planning, but ticket sales, premium hospitality, dynamic pricing and secondary-market strategy.

James has occupied that position for most of a career that began in 2003. He has been a central attraction for nationally televised games while playing for Cleveland, Miami and Los Angeles, and his first appearances in Philadelphia’s uniform are likely to receive similar treatment. He enters the season as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and said his move to Philadelphia represents his “last decision,” although he has not formally declared that the coming season will be his last.

The possibility that the season could become a de facto farewell tour may add another layer of demand, particularly for James’ visits to opposing arenas. Final appearances by historically prominent athletes frequently become premium events as buyers seek what may be their last opportunity to see the player in person.

That combination should place upward pressure on 76ers ticket prices as the schedule is released and individual games go on sale, with particularly heavy interest likely for opening night, Christmas, James’ return to Los Angeles and visits to Cleveland and Miami.
