Oakland Arena Sale Draws Potential Bidding Fight Between Legends, OVG

A battle may be taking shape over the future of Oakland Arena.
Legends Global, the company that has operated the Oakland Arena and Coliseum for the past 12 years, has submitted a formal offer to buy the arena as part of the broader sale of the East Oakland Coliseum complex. The bid adds a new wrinkle to an already tangled redevelopment process — and appears to put Legends in potential competition with Oak View Group, the venue giant founded by Irving Azoff.
According to reporting cited by the San Francisco Chronicle and The Oaklandside, Legends submitted its offer Tuesday, proposing a $102 million investment that would cover both the arena purchase price and needed repairs. The company also pledged to share a portion of future billboard advertising revenue with the city of Oakland and Alameda County if selected as the buyer.
The move follows reports that Oak View Group had already placed an offer of at least $100 million for the arena last month. OVG has reportedly been in discussions with Oakland officials and community members as the city and county work through a larger sale of the 112-acre Coliseum property.
At the center of the deal is Oakland Acquisition Co., also known as the African American Sports and Entertainment Group, which is moving to acquire the larger Coliseum site. But under the financing structure now in play, the Oakland Arena would be carved out and sold separately to a third-party buyer. That spinoff sale is a condition of closing — and the arena must fetch at least $100 million.
The Alameda County term sheet lays out the stakes. The county would pay Coliseum Way Partners $115 million at commercial closing, with OAC required to repay that amount in three installments with 5% compounding interest. The county would receive the greater of $50 million or half of the net proceeds from the arena sale. The first repayment is tied to either Planned Development Approval or a five-year backstop, while the agreement also includes as-is environmental language that has already drawn scrutiny.
For Legends, the pitch appears to be about more than matching the purchase price. In a letter to county supervisors, the company reportedly urged officials to consider “long-term stewardship” alongside the dollar figure, pointing to its history operating the venue and its proposed revenue-sharing component.
OVG, meanwhile, brings its own heavyweight venue resume. The company operates major arenas including Co-op Live in Manchester and Acrisure Arena in California, and has become one of the most aggressive players in the global venue business.
Legends is hardly a lightweight. The company is backed by Sixth Street Partners, along with affiliates of the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees, and has a deep footprint across stadiums, arenas, premium hospitality and venue operations.
That sets up a potentially significant choice for Oakland and Alameda County: stick with the operator that already knows the building, or hand the arena to another major venue player with ambitions to reshape the live-event market.
Either way, the arena sale is no longer just a side piece of the Coliseum redevelopment. With Legends now formally in the mix and OVG already circling, the future of one of Oakland’s most important entertainment venues may come down to a high-stakes contest between two of the biggest names in the venue business.
