Live Nation Entertainment and Academy Music Group (AMG) have announced a $12.7 million (£9.5 million) investment in the restoration of the Brighton Hippodrome, a historic venue that has been vacant for nearly two decades.
AMG, which is part of Live Nation Entertainment, has signed an agreement to operate the Grade II-listed building once redevelopment work is complete. Located on Middle Street in Brighton, the Hippodrome has been closed since 2006 and is expected to reopen as a live performance venue in 2027.
The investment from Live Nation and AMG is part of a wider £25 million ($33.5 million) redevelopment project aimed at restoring and modernizing the venue while preserving its historic features.
According to the project announcement, the funding will support upgrades to the venue’s infrastructure and facilities, allowing it to host a wider range of performances while maintaining its architectural character.
Brighton-based Matsim Properties purchased the building in 2020 and has since carried out extensive restoration work. Improvements include the installation of a new roof to protect the venue’s circular auditorium and ornate ceiling, both considered key architectural features of the building. Local reports also state that the venue’s capacity has been increased from 1,800 to 2,300.

Blueprint Studio, Live Nation’s in-house design and development division, is leading the interior fit-out of the venue. The project team also includes architect Burrell Foley Fischer, venue designer Charcoalblue, and Matsim as developer and property owner.
Originally opened in 1901, the Brighton Hippodrome was converted from a skating rink by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham. The venue later became a prominent variety theatre and hosted performers including Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Sammy Davis Jr.
Simon Lambor of Matsim shared, “We are delighted to have contracted AMG as the operator, who lead the way in performance venues across the country,” Lambor said.
“This wonderful building was in a perilous state when we bought it, and we are proud to have saved it from loss,” Lambor continued. “ After five years of tackling extensive damage caused by dry rot and water penetration, we are thrilled to see the Hippodrome ready for its next chapter.”
Steve Hoyland, chief operating officer of AMG, said the company is honored to be involved in the restoration project and expansion into Brighton.
“To open a venue in Brighton is an absolute privilege, and to see this historically important building alive with performance again will be an honour,” Hoyland said.
“Brighton is a new territory for AMG, and the city is truly special – thriving on creativity, arts and culture. Investing in British live entertainment and cultural institutions is vital for the future of our industry. The Brighton Hippodrome is an extraordinary venue with a rich history, and we’re proud to play a part in restoring it for generations to come.”
